y creating a secret spying service under the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa is attempting to create a police state for the safety of the Rajapaksa family regime, leader of the SLFP ‘Mahajana’ Wing, Mangala Samaraweera said.Speaking at the parliamentary debate on Budget 2009 today (Nov. 11th), Mr. Samaraweera emphasized that under the pretense of restructuring intelligence units, an intelligence network has been set up under the defence secretary at grassroots level to suppress political opponents and civil activists. The defence secretary has even been to China to study intelligence systems implemented in rural areas in that country, he added."Today, many government figures are embezzling money under the pretense of war. Only those who earn in this manner call for a war. Those who talk on behalf of war have never sent their children to the battlefront. This is not a war between two countries. It is between two communities that have lived in harmony for centuries," he said. The SLFP (M) leader emphasized that a political solution was essential to solve the ethnic conflict."Regardless of the community, those who die in the North and the South are Sri Lankan youths. However, the children of Rajapaksas and Prabhakaran study abroad," he stated. The government that establishes itself under the pretense of war doesn’t even respect war heroes, Mr. Samaraweera alleged. "A soldier who dies in battle is only given a compensation of Rs. 150,000 while a politician killed in a terrorist attack is given Rs. 5,000,000, he further said.
